Prayer & Spell Casting

For the past few months I’ve had the same question regarding the Christian practice of “prayer” to recur over and over in my mind. Care to follow my thought process for a while?

Why does a Christian pray? They think that by the words of the prayer, their hearts condition at the time, and often times the frequency and number of people simultaneously praying that prayer, that God will do what they ask.

Now, let’s examine the intent of a Wiccan spell.

I found a site called ReligiousTolerance.org when I googled, “what is a wiccan spell?” Here are a few quotes from that site:

“Spells are not about turning people into frogs or granting wishes. A spell is a set of actions and prayers that you do and say in order to ask for divine help with some particular aspect of your life.” ~Mnemosyne’s Realm 9

“Christians sometimes pray to their God with the intent of obtaining God’s power to change their life or to heal friends and family. Some light a prayer candle in their home or church. Such rituals have many parallels with Wiccan spells. What some Christians call prayers, Wiccans may call magickal spells.”

Is it me or does a Christian’s prayer and a Wiccan’s spell sound really, really similar…both in practice and intent?

In a recent conversation, a new acquaintance of mine said something to the affect of, “Religion only divides the spiritual, but it is all the same essence.” She meant that whether you call yourself a Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Wiccan, etc, we’re all talking about the same essence.

Personally, I call that essence “God” and believe with every fiber of my being that he is Love.

So what do you think? Is a Wiccan’s spell and a Christian’s prayer really the same thing? Why or why not?

*Disclaimer: I’m NOT trying to pick a fight with anyone here; nor am I trying to make a “point” of any kind. I’m just curious as to various opinions on such a question…please try to have an open mind as you respond.*

Christians have a relationship with God. We are allowed to approach God because of the blood of Jesus.

Many prayer rituals of Christianity do mimic the religious rituals of pagan practices because Christianity absorbed those practices when we absorbed those people.

Gods from old religions became “saints”, candles lit in pagan rites became altar candles and bells rung to summon or dispel spirits moved into church steeples.

The simplicity of Christianity is found in Christ’s words. “ask and it shall be given, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened.”

The lighting of candles, the ritual prayers of the liturgical church, the burning of incense, the ringing of bells are all ingredients we use out of habit or custom. They are not required by God.

thanks for expounding on the origin of some of those practices KC.

do you have any insight as to where the idea that if we “all pray together”, “pray enough times”, etc, about something that those things somehow have an affect on whether God honors that prayer or not?

Ohh boy. Don’t get me started on a tirade that will go into why I think Frank Peretti’s “This Present Darkness” is a hideous malformation of Christianity or why so many Christians mistake God for a cosmic vending machine that just occasionally eats your change.

I may end up going into it more over at my blog so as not to hog your comments, but the basic answer to your question is this:

The modern church has managed to be both far more pagan and far less spiritual than it should be. In our rush to sanitise the Church from being sullied by any actual religious experience we’ve turned it into a cultural ghetto.

As I said, our relationship with God is intended to be just that. A relationship. Paul talks of Jesus being our High Priest. Those aren’t just words. Jesus’ death created a mystic bridge whereby we humans can engage directly in a communication with the Divine. Hence some of Satan’s anger with us. He strove to be like God and failed. We, ironically, have a closer communication with God than Satan ever could.

Unfortunately in our rush to strip all mysticism out of the Church, we’ve also stripped most of the power out of our relationship with God. We’ve turned God from a mystical communicant into a sort of sugar-daddy.

Prayer always gives us answers, but mostly by opening our minds to that bridge of communication with the divine. We aren’t to be praying toward directed outcomes. “Ask and it shall be given” is often misunderstood to mean that if you ask hard enough, long enough or loud enough for a car or a pony or a baby or a new job you will get those things–and if you don’t get them, well you just didn’t do your best askin’!!!

That’s wrong. Very wrong. The act of asking is an act of engaging God. In talking WITH God (as opposed to yelling AT God) you achieve an understanding about what He wants for you. You may not get the car or the pony or the baby or the new job, but you will see how your life is a better one for you than what you thought you wanted.

Many of the “health and wealth” teachers of this present false age have seized upon this heresy. As a devout Christian with chronic illness I’m convinced by God that one of the very purposes of my illness is to act in testament against the false teachings of those who would say that you are only sick because you didn’t pray hard enough. Or that you are only poor because you didn’t ask God for money.

Our prayers are not about acheiving OUR desired outcome. They are about remaining in constant communication with God. God then gives us the eyes with which we can see Divine Wisdom play out in our earthly circumstance.

Prayers of petition are only one kind of Christian prayer. We also practice prayers of thanksgiving (although probably not as often as we should). A third type of Christian prayer is mental prayer or meditation that is practiced in order to build a closer relationship with God. Christian prayer is a lot more complex and diverse than most people know. I would suggest reading the article on prayer at the Catholic Encyclopedia. You can find it here.

    Jeffrey,
I cannot begin to speak on behalf of Wiccans or spell casting, but I can only answer this based on the Word of God and my own personal experience. The Word of God clearly shows again and again that prayer made a difference in Old Testament times and New Testament times. And I know that prayer in Jesus’ name in my life has transformed my life, circumstances and sometimes the people around me. Does it make a difference when two or more are gathered? Well, the Bible clearly states that when two or more gather together in prayer, it makes a difference (Matthew 18:20 – Where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them). I can attest to huge answers to prayer when I prayed with others about something. As an example, a few years ago, our marriage was not in a good place. My prayers alone did not seem to be making a difference. I and several others began getting together weekly to spend time praying for our marriages and our husbands. We used scripture as the basis for our prayers. The transformation that happened in our marriages, ourselves and our husbands were huge. Was this coincidence? I think not. This is just one example of how I have seen God demonstrate His power over and over again through prayer. If it is a coincidence than I suppose that my life is a series of coincidences. Jim Cymbala’s books ‘Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire” , “Fresh Faith”, and “Fresh Power” transformed my prayer life. I recommend them highly.

hey maria! how are ya? wow I didn’t know you knew of my blog.

As you can see (or even if you couldn’t), I’m playing a little devil’s advocate here on this post.

As i was writing this post I as thinking of the conceptual similarities in the wiccan spell, christian prayer, new age visualization, and more.

Do you have any ideas as to how evangelical christians came to believe that God responds and moves more readily when numerous people pray the same thing? Or does that mean we can manipulate God? Does it mean that God cares more about the masses than the individual?

I’m not being sarcastic or cynical, those are just some questions that come to mind when I think about prayer…as I was brought up to believe it.

I’m new to belief but I’m not subject to any or one set religion i believe in all aspects therefore my will power is strong i believe in spell castings and hexes….. I’m no devel worshiper and I’m no God worshiper but all mainstream religions and most non mainstream religions are real as far as spell casting and praying they are two different things or they would have been made one in that set religion

  • Gayle

They are very similar if not the same thing ! Only each person of their own religious belief will claim theirs is different ! You mentioned that you believe that “GOD” is love…Then I have to wonder what your version of love really is ? The OT God is the same God of the NT….if he is LOVE why then does he massacre so many people in the OT at his command…babies, elderly, animals etc…genocide ? What happened to the Native American people…genocide ! Who participated in it and ochestrated it ? Christians and Christian world leaders ! Where did they get that idea from ? The OT bible of course ! Those Christian that did that to the Native Americans only did what the OT taught them to do by example ! African American slavery also was encouraged and influenced by the OT bible ! it is so obviously a fact that cannot realistically be denied! slave owners were mostly Christians and were going by the OT !
One would have to seriously ask themselves….would you worship Hitler knowing what he has done ? Then why would you worship a God who does evil also to human beings and encourages it ? I was once a total Christian ans gave up my whole life to obey God and do his will..prayer was everything and major part of my life and so was bible study and church. But I started thinking for myself and realized I was worshiping a God who does evil to humans ! Christians worship blindly this wicked God or they are just as wicked as he is and don’t mind the evil he does as long as they get to go to heaven ! I would much rather share in the sufferings of man than worship a God like that. A lot of those people God murdered could have been your friend or family if you lived back then on the OT times…?
Prayer is speaking and asking for something…help, healing, or saying thanks to a higher power in hopes that those things will be done. casting a spell is the same…you are sending out a hope, and thanks for something you need help with to a higher power…then with both prayer and spells…you wait and think positive ad live as if you have it already so as to draw that to you…or have it happen. Prayer and Spells are the exact same….sometimes they happen and sometimes they don’t. Wondered why until I really thought hard about this….when a prayer is answered it usually is that way because they are circumstances or persons already existing that make it possible for it to happen. Spells are the same…..if the right circumstance and people who can make it happen are available then most likely it will happen.
If you needed food really bad and were starving and prayed to your God..but stayed home to yourself and never mentioned that prayer to anyone or asked anyone for help or let on you needed food and just silently waited for it..would you get food because you prayed alone for it ? NO !
If you prayed to God for food and then mentioned it to other humans beings that you needed food help and asked for it from others..would your prayer be answered.. yes !
Then Christians turn around and thank God for the food even though it came from people and some are not even believers in God that might have helped !
It is ONLY when I ask other humans and out the word out I need help that I received help !
I have asked God in secret for help many times and even cried out as the bible tells us to…but let no other person know…and I NEVER got help or answered prayer…ever !
The bible was written a long time ago when people were superstitious..it has been changed, altered, added to, had been interpreted many times over differently that it is not even reliable any longer ! There are many religions before Jesus that had the exact same story line also..there is NO real proof of Jesus and the story other then the bible itself. Even artifacts found only show that there was a religion back than that was Christian…but there is also artifacts to show other religions existed also back then and through out history ! There is NO historical Roman documents of any “Jesus” and only that there weas a clan etc..that called themselves Christians who made a scene back then that got them noticed a bit. But like I said there is history from way back also showing there were other so called messiahs that caused problems. We have the same today….look at the cults we have now that get attention and are recorded in history.
if you have a pretty good life and access to help from others or in your own life circumstance that make it possible ..your so called prayers will get answered.
I myself have non of that stuff working on my behalf and so my prayers since a child never got answered and I never got any help ever….I had to do it myself or go out and ask real people for help ! If there is a higher power in the heavens we cannot put them into a box and label them as Christian God with a book ( like a bible) about them and how they think and are etc…They just are… if they are really real ! My son said it well……he says it hurts him to see those who believe in this Christian God be destroyed emotionalyl and in their minds whe they honestly walk with him and pray to him to not have him come to help them…but then they watch other claiming their prayer was answered and they got help…because it makes that person who didnlt get the help or answer to their prayer feels unloved, forgotten, abandoned, rejected, uncared for and like they are not worthy etc…
I am was one of those people and even after walking away…I still suffer those feelings every single day of my life ! Christianity has caused me deep depression and extremely low self esteem and I wil, struggle with it forever now ! Most who claim they got prayers answered with a yes…have done nothing more deserving then I have …nor do they live an purely honest life and obey ALL God says either ! Why would God answer their prayers with yes and not some hungry starving childs prayer for food a basic need to live and survive ? I find it very self absorbing and arrogant to thin he answers your prayer over a child who needs serious help urgently ! The children get fed in starving countries because HUMANS try to feed them ! Not because of God ! Let’s be real with ourselves for once !
cast spells, or pray they are all the same ! Just be positive and hope you have circumstances or people there to make then happen for you ………………..

OK… Prayer is just another term for TALKING. When you have a discussion with a friend and ask his opinion or for him to lend you a hand or help do you believe he will do it? Faith is the term for TRUST. If I know god is real and that he hears me as you would your friend.. then I know he will do what I ask of Him. Why will he do it ? He is real and he loves me. He knows what is best for me… thus the term, ” Heavenly Father”. This is an intimate relationship with the one who created the universe and you and me. Now.. I can chose to trust that book called the bible and put my faith in the one who inspired it. I can also trust in numerous other things….

Spells are different .A spell is believing in other forces. Now I believe there are other forces.. but they do not originate from the one true God. This could get very deep and philosophical so I will try to explain it as simply as I can. I do see the correlation here. A spell is allowing yourself to TRUST in other spirits. Religion is a means of allowing oneself to trust in doing something to gain divine favor. True Christianity is already having divine favor because of what Christ did already. I simply TRUST that. I dont DO anything to earn anything.. Its that simple. God gave me the gift of his son. I believed it. received it and now he is in my life. I TALK (PRAY) to him everyday and he provides for me as his child. I do not see spells as a relationship. This is where I see a huge difference… While externally the motives may seem similar they are in contrast. Spiritually speaking I do see that a spirit can administer limited answers… but there is no RELATIONSHIP.

Now I will get back to your friend. A friend is more than someone you trust and ask things for. A friend can be relied upon and trusted to hold best interest if they are a true friend. A spirit is not a friend, a spirit does not love you, a spirit just does bidding. Why would this happen? Well god, my friend has told me that this happens because demons are real.. some people call them familiars. If you were Satan and the bible is true.. wouldnt you do everything to deceive as many people as you could ? satan is like an Angel of light which means he appears as people desire to see him.. beautiful in fact..

Id rather put my Faith ( trust) in a God who died for me than in a spirit…. because the creator of this Universe cares personally for me.. and you… so what religion is there in christianity? ZERO.. God is my friend.. thats it.

  • D Briggs

Please read my post above.. Youve got it all wrong. You cant do anything to earn anything ! You missed the boat dude… relationship is not doing anything… you got it backwards.. you dont do WORKS to receive.. you receive and then just like the relationship with your guy/gal you WANT to do because of what??? L O V E. Ill talk to my friend Jesus about you…. Your loved and your not expected to perform for it ! Its the best trick in the book… but its not from God .. I can tell you that 100%. Jesus is not a cult he is a person who came here to show unconditional love by dying upon an old rugged cross. he just wanted to love you… thats really all there is…You dont need to do anything.

  • D Briggs

Also, there are numerous documents confirming scripture and many other writers such as Josephus and others. Please read Josh Mcdowell more than a carpenter. Search the historical references yourself in depth and do a true search on the history of Christ. Dont just believe vague references without doing research. I have a PhD in theology and a few other degrees. I look for facts… but I also understand the principal of faith and trust. Suffering is a consequence.. Ive had cancer and grew up in foster homes.. but thats not Gods fault. Please consider what I am saying… do some old fashioned research. You are deeply loved…
